By now I know you heard Kobe say that his Dream Team would have beaten the original Dream Team, which Jordan played on. Personally I think you can put together an All-Star team from every generation and they couldnt beat the original Dream Team. So I just want to give you a quick comparison of the two teams if they would have played today.
1992 Dream Team vs 2012 Dream Team
Michael Jordan > Kobe Bryant
In 1992 The Greatest of All Time was entering his prime. Michael Jordan just won his first NBA title. There was two words that would describe MJ: Pure. Killer.
Kobe on the other hand is in the twilight of his career. Sure he’s still popular among the fans today, but purely based off his past career.
Magic Johnson > Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Deron Williams
If you combined all three of the 2012 point guards you couldnt come up with a bad Magic Johnson. You might be able to come up with a John Stockon, who was Magic’s backup and is also in the Hall of Fame.
Larry Bird < Kevin Durant
Larry Legend could barely walk up the court during the ’92 Olympics, therefore Kevin Durant would have absolutly destroyed Larry Bird if they would have played.
Scottie Pippen, Clyde Drexler = LeBron James
I want to lean towards LeBron here because he’s a man-beast AND the best player in the NBA today. But Scottie Pippen was hands down the best defender in the NBA for many-a-years. He was also a big time scorer as well as Drexler was. So Im going to say this is a push.
Patrick Ewing, David Robinson > Tyson Chandler
Chandler is the only legit center on the ’12 team. No contest. Ewing and The Admiral averaged 20 points each in ’92. And are considered two of the greatest centers of all time. Tyson Chandler in 11 seasons hasnt made a single All Star team.
Karl Malone > Blake Griffin
This is something that I wish I could have really seen. The Mailman would remind the media and YouTube what a power forward is supposed to be. Theres no way Blake would be able to dunk on Malone without eating some of the hardwood. Plus, Malone’s jumper was nothing to sneeze at. Blake can jump. But has no jumper.
Charles Barkley > Kevin Love
Kevin Love? He’s the most boring power forward in the modern era. Barkley, another player who was already a superstar and was a couple of years into his prime. If this is Kevin Love’s prime, then theres no contest here. Not only was Barkley a better player, he would have chumped Love into carrying his sweaty socks.
Chris Mullin, Christian Laettner > James Harden, Andre Iguodala
Mullin was one of the most deadliest shooters the NBA has ever seen. Andre Iguodala, not so much. Yeah Iguodala can defend, but Mullin has that awesome New York accent and attitude so you just know that Mullin will get off some bombs from behind the 3-point line. James Harden proved to us what kind of player he was in this years finals when he disappeared. And Laettner was just coming off the National Player of the Year award. He was a pretty boy, but a tough asshole who had at 6’10″ would pound in the paint and step out from 20 feet and shoot the lights out.
So inconclusion, Kobe just needs to relax and remember who exactly was on that original Dream Team because it wasnt Rex Chapman and Sam Bowie.
